Donetsk oblast evacuates children amid escalated Russian shelling

The evacuation of children from Lyman and six villages has been announced in Donetsk oblast due to the escalating security concerns in the area, regional governor, Vadym Filashkin, reported on June 1.

The security situation in the region has significantly worsened over the past week, he said.

"Given the persistent heavy shelling, a crucial decision regarding the evacuation of families with children from specific settlements in the oblast was reached during a meeting of the regional commission for Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies," Filashkin said.

"The affected areas include Lyman, as well as the villages of Lypove, Nove, Karpivka, Stavky within the Lyman municipality, Prohres in the Hrodiv municipality, and Zorya in the Illinivska municipality."

He added that "the regional military administration is currently awaiting approval of this decision from the Coordination Headquarters for Mandatory Population Evacuation in Conditions of Martial Law."

Local authorities have emphasized the urgency for residents to relocate to safer regions within Ukraine and have cautioned against endangering their own lives and those of their loved ones.
