Dolphin with two heads washes up on Turkish beach

It was not your average day at the beach for gym teacher Tugrul Metin.

The 29-year-old was splashing in the waves in Izmir, on Turkey's west coast, when a shocking sight washed up onto the sand in front of him.

Metin discovered the body of a deceased two-headed dolphin, which measured about one metre long and was estimated to be about one year old.

Metin told the Turkish Times, "I couldn't take it in at first — I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me."

He added that one of the heads' eyes was not fully opened, nor was one of the blowholes.

Police removed the body of the dolphin from the beach, and an associate professor from Ak Deniz University will begin studying it.

The professor, Mehmet Gokoglu, told press that he looked forward to analyzing the unique animal.

"Such a dolphin is a very rare occurrence — similar to the occurrence of conjoined human twins."
