'Dog noises' made as Jacqui Lambie addressed Senate: 'Inappropriate'

The Senate has been rocked by claims Senator Jacqui Lambie was jeered with dog noises and 'growling' as she spoke.

Ms Lambie, who has been an outspoken figure against Prime Minister Scott Morrison, was speaking in the Senate on Tuesday afternoon about social housing.

But after she sat down, a furious Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young took the floor.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate given what was handed down today to have growling and dog noises coming from this side of the chamber while a female member in this place is on her feet,” Ms Hanson-Young said.

“It happened. I don’t know who is responsible for it but it is inappropriate.”

Ms Hanson-Young is referring to the Kate Jenkins review which found more than half of Parliamentary staff have suffered some form of sexual harassment and or bullying.

“If we are going to change culture from the top, that means all of us,” she said.

Labor Senator Penny Wong backed her allegations, claiming she heard it too.

“I would ask one of the Senators at that end to do the right thing and withdraw,” she said.

“At least fess up.”

No one did.

Senate President Slade Brockman said he didn’t hear any growling and could not ask anyone to withdraw.

It remains unclear who was responsible but the direction both Ms Hanson-Yong and Ms Wong were pointing in was towards Coalition senators.

Victorian Senator David Van told NCA NewsWire he was interjecting at the time and may have been misheard because he has a low voice and was wearing a mask.

Mr Van said he did not growl but offered an apology.

Simon Birmingham, the leader of government in the Senate, told NCA NewsWire he has asked the whip to investigate who was responsible and that if it did happen it was “obviously inappropriate”.
