Police are hunting thieves behind a sickening act of animal cruelty.

The group broke into a home in North Perth last Wednesday but didn’t steal anything and instead broke a dog’s leg and left the animal for dead.

A huge scar held together by 30 stitches now runs down Maya’s back leg.

The staffy-cross can barely walk and is now scared of people.

“I don’t understand what gets into somebody that they have to do something to a defenceless animal like that … it’s really disgusting,” dog owner Daniel Kohl said.

Maya’s owners weren’t home last Wednesday morning when thugs broke in to their North Perth home and caused the injuries that needed nine pins and a metal plate to fix.

The surgery cost Maya’s owners thousands of dollars.
