Boy, 9, 'fatally mauled by dogs' after going to check letterbox

A 9-year-old boy in Arkansas was killed in a suspected dog attack when he went to check the mail, investigators said.

Faulkner County Sheriff's Office reported a call from the boy’s mother at 9.15am (local time) on Thursday.

She said her son had gone outside to collect the mail and when he didn’t return a few minutes later she went out looking for him, but was unable to find him.

His mother also told police she had noticed several dogs running from a field near their home.

Authorities have questioned two people in connection with the boy’s death and two dogs were taken to a local animal shelter.

The dogs will be quarantined and held for investigative purposes.

The tragic accident is still under investigation.
