Doctor's remarkable cancer diagnosis from seeing woman on TV
An eagle-eyed doctor relaxing at home after a long day’s work has remarkably diagnosed a cancerous lump on a woman’s neck as she appeared on TV.
Nicole McGuinness, 32, from North Carolina, was featuring on US television station HGTV’s show Beachfront Bargain Hunt alongside her father when Dr Erich Voigt noticed something abnormal.
The ear, nose and throat surgeon at NYU Langone Health spotted a small lump on Ms McGuinness’s throat as she searched for her dream house on South Carolina’s coast after successfully beating brain cancer.
“I felt obliged to let this person know,” Dr Voigt told Inside Edition.
“They may not know they have something.”
Dr Voigt decided to take it upon himself and track down McGuinness via social media on May 5, using Facebook to share a portion of the show in hopes that he would be able to connect with her.
More than 7,000 views later, the post finally reached Ms McGuinness, who acted on Dr Voigt’s advice and immediately went to see a doctor.
On Friday, her biopsy results came back, revealing she had thyroid cancer.
“Awesome power of Facebook and good people!” Dr Voigt said in a follow-up post.
“She will be seeing a surgeon and getting appropriate treatment and I hope she will be cured!”
To show her gratitude to the observant doctor, Ms McGuinness met with Dr Voigt personally to thank him.
“Thank you so much, you have no idea how much you’ve impacted my life,” she told him.
I am watching a tv show and notice this woman has a left thyroid mass. She needs a sonogram and fine needle biopsy. I wonder if she knows and hope it’s benign. #beachfrontbargainhunt.
