Doctor Who has announced some more exciting casting news ahead of its upcoming 60th anniversary specials.

Three special episodes of the long running sci-fi will air in November with David Tennant reprising his role as The Doctor.

However, it’s now been confirmed that Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes will be joining Tennant and the rest of the star-studded cast.

Announcing the casting news on Thursday (September 14), the BBC revealed Margolyes will be taking on the role of an alien – which some fans may recognise from The Star Beast comic strip.

She’ll provide the voice for Meep in the new episodes and has shared her excitement to be joining the Doctor Who family.

"I’m relieved I got to work on Doctor Who before I died," Margolyes said in a statement. "With sci-fi you never know. Thank you for making an old woman very happy."

Margolyes isn't the only famous face who will star in the upcoming instalments of Doctor Who.

Catherine Tate (Donna Noble) and Bernard Cribbins (Wilfred Mott) are also set to feature in the special episodes as they reprise their iconic roles.

Joining them will be Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney and How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris.

Beyond the three anniversary specials, the hit sci-fi will return with a brand-new season in 2024.

The new season will see the debut of Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.

Joining Gatwa in the TARDIS will be Coronation Street star Millie Gibson as she plays the Doctor's new companion Ruby Sunday.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
