Breakthrough in cold case murder that's baffled detectives

There has been a sensational breakthrough in a cold case murder investigation that has baffled detectives for 30 years.

Police are closing in on a suspect as major crime detectives now have a DNA match in the murder of 31-year-old Peter Seaford, from Whyalla in South Australia.

Mr Seaford was brutally bashed to death in his flat in 1989, with detectives believing robbery was the motive.

Minutes before he was attacked, Mr Seaford had responded to an alarm at a Whyalla service station he part-owned after an object was thrown through the window.

As he and police assessed the damage, he made the fateful decision to return to his home to check on the day’s takings – a decision that ultimately cost him his life.

A full profile has been on the national database for years after DNA was collected from the crime scene, but it’s understood the match came earlier this month.

Detectives have been back in Whyalla in recent days and weeks interviewing locals.

Major Crime detectives declined to comment on Thursday for operational reasons, except to say that fresh inquiries are being made and they are in contact with Mr Seaford’s family about the developments.
