Disturbing history of clifftop lookout where woman and child found dead

The NSW cliff where a mother and her daughter were found dead below, has a dark history.

Police on Tuesday found a 33-year-old woman and her two-year-daughter dead after the pair went over the edge of a cliff at tourist spot Robertson Lookout, at Mount Keira, near Wollongong, in the Illawarra region.

The lookout is about one-and-a-half hour’s drive from Sydney and offers stunning views over Wollongong.

The cliff has been revealed as the same place from which a 31-year-old woman plunged to her death, holding her child 17 years ago.

On April 18, 2002, the mother jumped off the same cliff holding her five-year-old son. In that tragedy, the child miraculously survived the fall with his mother’s body taking the brunt of the impact, The Sydney Morning Herald reported at the time.

Emergency workers heard the boy crying hours after the pair fell and rushed to rescue him.

The young boy reportedly suffered multiple abrasions, but managed to survive the fall, however his mother was killed instantly.

Both bodies in Tuesday’s double fatality have since been retrieved from the dense bushland at the bottom of the Mount Keira lookout.

NSW Police told Yahoo News Australia that while the police operation was completed, the area remained a crime scene and was closed to the public.
