A study of McDonald’s touchscreens in the UK has revealed “surprising” results.
The study undertaken by The Metro newspaper of every McDonald’s touchscreen in the UK found bacteria including faecal germs covering the screens used to order food.
Diners use the touchscreens to choose their food then head to the counter to collect their meals.
London Metropolitan University’s Dr Paul Matawele said he was “surprised” by the results and added the faecal and gut bacteria cause “the kind of infections that people pick up in hospitals”.
Dr Matawele said seeing Staphylococcus on the screens was “worrying” due to how contagious it is.
The bacteria cause staph infections.
Listeria was found on screens in two separate restaurants while 75 per cent of the screens swabbed had proteus bacteria on them – a bacteria found in human and animal faeces.
McDonald’s cleans its screens but Dr Matawele is concerned the disinfectant might not be strong enough.
In a statement to The Metro, a McDonald’s spokesman said the screens are cleaned “frequently” and facilities are provided for customers to wash their hands.
A McDonald’s Australia spokesperson told Yahoo7 in a statement the restaurant has “rigorous cleaning procedures in place”.
“Our self-order kiosk screens are cleaned frequently throughout the day with a sanitiser solution and all of our restaurants have facilities for customers to wash their hands before eating,” the spokesperson said.
