Dick Van Dyke has revealed he was left with stitches in his lip after he was involved in a car crash earlier this month.

The Hollywood veteran actor, 97, was said to have been driving a 2018 Lexus LS 500 in the Malibu area of Los Angeles, when the single-vehicle accident took place on March 15.

Police officers arrived on the scene to find the Mary Poppins star behind the wheel of the car, which had crashed into a gate.

According to TMZ, Van Dyke suffered minor injuries, including bleeding from the nose and a concussion. He was treated at the scene but reportedly did not want to go to hospital.

And now the legendary screen star revealed he hadn’t lost his sense of humour in the crash as he detailed his injuries for the first time with the outlet.

He told the publication: “[Feeling] Pretty good ... just sore all over. The airbags did not deploy, so I just had a face plant right in the steering wheel and it made me a little dumber.”

The actor, who was joined by his wife Arlene and another during an impromptu interview, then gestured towards his bottom lip and said: “I have two stitches here.”

“I’m 97 ― all my friends are dead. I’m still having fun,” he added before jokingly asking the reporter behind the camera, “You’re not, huh? I think some people thought I was dead.”

Following Van Dyke’s accident, it was reported that the police department had submitted paperwork to the DMV requesting that he retake his driving test due to his age.

Born Richard Wayne Van Dyke, the cinema icon was born in West Plains, Missouri on December 13, 1925.

He has been inducted into both the Television Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
