Devastation as two dogs die from suspected baiting at popular parks

Dog lovers have been left devastated over the deaths of two pups believed to have been baited while visiting popular Brisbane parks.

The pups reportedly died this week after suddenly falling ill, hours after playing at parks in Newstead and New Farm.

Their owners suspect the dogs ate something which was poisoned, and fear baiters are targeting local dogs.

“Something she ate off the ground had been poisoned by an unknown toxin and she had passed within 24 hours of becoming sick,” a social media post said of Chihuahua cross corgi, Kiody — one of the victims.

The following day a local claimed to have discovered chopped pieces of meat scattered at New Farm park and said they reported it to the council before it was removed.

On Friday, 10-month-old Berlin the beagle cross had to be put down hours after falling ill and rapidly deteriorating.

She had been playing at Waterfront Park in Newstead only hours earlier, and her owners also suspect she had been poisoned.

Berlin’s owner Teresa Griffo warned others to be vigilant and to keep an eye out for dog baits.

“[The vet] said it was definitely something Berlin had ingested but they just don’t know what,” she wrote on social media.

“Please be vigilant with your dogs in this neighbourhood, apparently there are baits everywhere.”

A community Instagram account, featuring dogs of New Farm, shared the “devastating” news of Kiody’s death on Wednesday.

“Don’t let them eat anything off the ground, as there are soulless individuals out there who wish to do your dogs harm,” the post read.
