Turnbull (3-2) threw the eighth no-hitter in Tigers history, the first since Justin Verlander did so in 2011.

It marks the fifth no-hitter this year in Major League Baseball, the most thrown in a single season since 2015. It is the first time since the 1917 season that five no-hitters were thrown in a single season through May 18, too, according to The Associated Press.

“It’s just surreal, I don’t really have words right now,” Turnbull said on Bally Sports Detroit. “[It’s] probably the best day, best night of my life to be honest with you. It’s pretty freaking cool.”

Three runners reached base on Turnbull, as he walked Jarred Kelenic in the fourth inning and Jose Marmolejos in the ninth. Kelenic grounded into a fielder's choice in the ninth.

Tuesday was just the first time that Turnbull threw more than seven innings in 49 career starts. The 28-year-old is in his fourth season with the Tigers. He held a 3.91 ERA headed into Tuesday’s contest.

The Mariners have now been no-hit twice this season, after Baltimore Orioles pitcher John Means got them earlier this month. They are the first team since 1900 to be no-hit twice in the same month, according to ESPN
