Details emerge on how toddler was killed outside Melbourne childcare centre

More details surrounding the death of a three-year-old girl outside a Melbourne childcare centre have been revealed.

The Broadmeadows girl was hit by a vehicle in the car park at Kiddy Palace Learning Centre on McDonalds Road, Epping about 4.45pm on Monday and died at the scene, while a 26-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a stable condition, police said.

The woman was tending to one of three other children inside the car when it began moving backwards, a police spokesperson said.

Police said it had not yet been determined what caused the vehicle to move backwards and result in the death of the toddler.

The investigation is ongoing.

Televised footage showed a childcare care centre taped off with police and emergency services at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Daryll Out on Monday described it as a "terrible incident".

"The incident occurred when a car accidentally struck the young girl," he told The Herald Sun, adding he could not give further information about how it happened.

"We certainly urge anybody who's around children to be very careful and mindful that terrible accidents such as these can occur if everyone is not paying full attention to what they are doing."

The driver of the vehicle is helping investigators.
