Democrats pick up House seat in New York as Williams loses to Mannion

Democratic state Sen. John Mannion defeated incumbent GOP Rep. Brandon Williams, flipping his upstate New York district.

Williams swept into office on New York’s “red wave” in 2022 but was considered one of the most vulnerable members this year. President Biden won Williams’s district in 2020, and redistricting changes made it so Biden would have won with an even greater margin.

The race was seen as a key pickup opportunity for Democrats in their quest to win control of the House, and one of the early barometers to watch on Tuesday.

China sends largest naval fleet in decades to region, threat level severe, Taiwan says
TAIPEI (Reuters) -China is deploying its largest navy fleet in regional waters in nearly three decades, posing a threat to Taiwan that is more pronounced than previous Chinese war games, the Taiwanese defence ministry said on Tuesday. Speaking in Taipei, defence ministry spokesperson Sun Li-fang said the scale of the current Chinese naval deployment in an area running from the southern Japanese islands down into the South China Sea was the largest since China held war games around Taiwan ahead of 1996 Taiwanese presidential elections. China's military has yet to comment and has not confirmed it is carrying out any exercises.
