Driver charged after airport crash

A driver has been charged after a pedestrian was hit by a minivan in an accident outside Sydney International Airport on Monday.

Emergency services rushed to the airport about 6.40am responding to reports a pedestrian had been struck by a minivan along Departure Plaza.

Paramedics treated a 76-year-old man at the scene and took him to St George Hospital where he was in a serious but stable condition.

The 74-year-old driver of the Hyundai Staria minivan was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He will appear in court on October 14.

The crash shut down one lane along Departure Place and the airport suffered through major traffic delays in the early morning.

LiveTraffic showed the lanes have since reopened.
