A one-year-old child has died in hospital, after sustaining injuries at a daycare earlier this month in the US state of California.
On November 3, officers from Visalia Police Department responded to a call regarding an unconscious infant at the Imagination Playhouse daycare.
After medical personnel arrived on the scene, they began treating the girl who was then transported to a health facility in an ambulance.
In a statement on Facebook, police said they were told by staff at the hospital the child sustained non-accidental injuries. She was then airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital.
"The injuries the child had were something that we don’t see as being accidental. It was something that was definitely related to abuse,” police spokesperson Jared Hughes said, according to WCTI-TV.
The Violent Crimes Unit was asked to take over the investigation and detectives found the girl had sustained injuries while at the daycare and under the care of 41-year-old Amanda Taylor.
"It was also learned [by detectives] that Taylor was the only adult who had contact with the victim during that time frame," Visalia Police Department said.
On November 8, the child died due to her injuries.
Though Visalia Police said Taylor was arrested without incident and booked, the Tulare County District Attorney's Office said charges could not be filed right now.
“An incident as tragic and intricate as this requires a significant amount of information to make a decision to file charges," Assistant District Attorney Dave Alavezos said in a statement.
"Unfortunately, we do not possess everything we need to make that decision at this time.”
Alavezos said several documents still need to be reviewed, including a full autopsy to determine time frame and cause of death and witness statements from parents and those at the daycare facility.
"Our burden of proof requires that we have this information and enough time to thoroughly analyse it,” he said.
The District Attorney's Office is requesting "further investigative information" about the death of the one-year-old child.
According to the Visalia Times Delta, detectives have had additional reports of abuse linked to the daycare.
