David Luiz missed Arsenal training on Wednesday and is now a doubt for the Premier League opener against Fulham on Saturday.

There are reports of a neck injury for the Brazilian, though Mikel Arteta is yet to comment on the issue and its severity.

The Gunners will hope David Luiz can recover quickly given his form towards the end of last season, which helped clinch victory in the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

David Luiz’s experience will also be vital for Arsenal hitting the ground running as focus switches to securing a top four finish and Champions League football.

The arrivals of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes provide an exciting future for the Gunners, but the former Chelsea star will be crucial in smoothing out the duo integrating into Arteta’s defence.

Luiz has penned a new one-year contract extension this summer and will be a free agent next year.

Gabriel has spoken of his admiration for Saliba, with the pair facing each other in Ligue 1.

“I know [Saliba] is a talented young player and if he is joining Arsenal it is because of his quality,” Gabriel told Arsenal’s official website.

"We have a few friends in common and I did play against him before. He is a great player and I am sure we will get along very well."

Arsenal carried over their momentum last term by defeating Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield.

Arsenal travel to Craven Cottage for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against the Premier League newcomers.
