Dashcam of driver going through amber light sparks debate

Dashcam footage of a driver travelling through an amber light moments before being pulled over by police has sparked debate.

Video shows a motorcyclist driving toward an intersection, when the traffic light turned from green to amber.

As he pulls up to a stop, a car from behind flies through the amber light in the inside lane, appearing to speed up to make it through the intersection.

A police car, waiting at the road on the left, then turns on its sirens to follow the driver. It is unknown if police were pursuing the driver over their speed or continuing through the amber light.

The footage was uploaded to the Dashcam Owners Australia Facebook page on Monday and while many criticised the driver for his “dangerous” decision, others said he had done nothing wrong.

“Some people think the amber light is meant for you to speed up and hurry through when in reality you should stop if its safe to do so, my guess is he sped up and deserves a ticket.”

Another said: “Love instant karma!!! It’s rare but it’s wonderful.”

Others said he had made it into the intersection before the light turned red.

“Technically he had fully entered the intersection before the lights turned red,” one man wrote.

Another said: “That’s not a red light violation, what are we watching here??”

Some even slammed the motorbike rider who shared the footage for taking his hands off the wheel to clap as the police car took off.

The motorbike rider was no better, he was clapping so wasn’t in control of his motorbike,” one of the comments read.

While it is unknown where the footage was taken, in all Australian states and territories an amber light means stop unless it is unsafe to do so.

Failing to stop at an amber traffic light will cost NSW drivers up to $448 or $403 for Victorians.
