Dark twist after couple 'vanishes' during weekend away

A son who claimed his parents vanished during a weekend away has been arrested after his father's dismembered body parts were discovered.

Bart Halderson, 50, and his 53-year-old wife Krista Halderson, were reported missing by their son on July 7 after he said they visited a mountain cabin in the US state of Wisconsin to celebrate the July 4 holiday.

Their son, Chandler Halderson, told police his parents were spending the weekend away with an unknown couple and never returned.

Court documents obtained by Channel 3000 state Chandler told police his mother sent him a text message on July 4 saying they had arrived at White Lake.

He allegedly told police his mother told him of plans to attend a parade the same day, but police discovered there was no holiday parade taking place in White Lake and the couple had not been seen at the cabin.

The couple had not been seen since July 1, and following interviews with the couple's family, friends and neighbours, investigators were led to a property in Cottage Grove on July 8 where they found the remains of the father.

The cause of death was listed as "homicidal violence including firearm injury".

The mother still remains missing and police are calling for information that could lead them to her whereabouts.

Chandler was arrested on a charge of providing false information to investigators, however the Wisconsin State Journal reports the Dane County District Attorney's office expect to charge the 23-year-old son in relation to his father's death.

Channel 3000 reports Chandler is being held in prison but is yet to be formally charged with any offences.
