Dana Mathewson | Tokyo 2020 Olympic Profile

Team USA wheelchair tennis player Dana Mathewson speaks about the difference between her training for the Rio games vs. training for the Tokyo games.

Video transcript

DANA MATHEWSON: I'm Dana Mathewson. I'm a wheelchair tennis player, and I am currently the number one ranked female in the US, and the number nine ranked female in the world, which is much better showing than I did when I competed in Rio. So I'm hoping that Tokyo goes a lot better for me.

I've been lucky that tennis is a socially distant sport and that I've been able to practice pretty much this whole time. But I haven't been able to really compete.

So I used to live in a house with two other girls. And we decided to move all of our furniture out of our living room. And then we got like that blue painter's tape, and we made a miniature tennis court in our living room and put that up and everything. And we basically just played mini tennis with each other.

And it definitely wasn't pretty, but it was fun. It's been a frustrating year. But it's also been a time of like self-reflection and the chance to just work harder and get better. When this game does come along, so I'm really looking forward to it.
