Alcohol retailer Dan Murphy's is set to hire 2,200 new staff this week by offering on-the-spot job interviews in stores as it confronts a labour shortage in the lead-up to the busy Christmas and summer season.

The company will offer 10-minute job interviews to anyone who expresses interest in joining any of the 258 Dan Murphy's stores across Australia, in a hiring blitz that is set to take place until next Sunday, September 11.

"We wanted to make it as easy as possible for people who are interested in a career with Dan Murphy's to get a foot in the door," Dan Murphy's incoming managing director Agi Pfeiffer-Smith said in a statement.

The chain is looking to fill approximately 670 roles in New South Wales, 570 in Queensland, 530 in Victoria, 280 in Western Australia and 140 in South Australia.

"Every single Dan Murphy's store is hiring, so just come as you are and our commitment to every applicant is that we will give you a short interview on the spot," Pfeiffer-Smith said, adding that the majority of available roles were for a minimum of 20 hours per week with immediate start dates.

Who is eligible?

To be successful, the retailer said an applicant needed to be at least 18 years of age and had the right customer-service skills.

Applicants without an RSA certification are still able to apply because Dan Murphy's will provide the training and cover the costs for it.

Pfeiffer-Smith also said Dan Murphy's offered training programs and great opportunities for career development, as well as perks such as team discounts on drinks, groceries and pub meals.

"We are encouraging people from all walks of life to consider spending a summer with Dan; from university students to retirees who are looking to fill in a few hours a day or a few days a week, and everyone in between," Pfeiffer-Smith said.

Australia has the second-most severe labour and skills shortage in the world, with many businesses struggling to fill positions in various industries despite unemployment hitting a near-50-year low at 3.4 per cent in July.
