A call for help has ended in tragedy for a father in Victoria's east.

The 55-year-old had come to the aid of his son, who had a flat tyre on the Princes Highway at Flynn on Friday morning, between Traralgon and Rosedale on Friday morning.

The man was standing on the road next to his car when he was hit by an approaching vehicle.

He died at the scene just before 8.20am.

“Whilst they’ve been attending to the puncture, the father has been hit by another car passing beside and unfortunately he’s died,” Senior Sergeant Luke Banwell said.

The 23-year-old driver of the car, who stopped immediately, has been treated for shock in hospital.

“It’s the most tragic thing that can happen to a community, particularly when all the people are from that community,” Sn Sgt Banwell said.

“This will have ripple effects through the community.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the incident.

They’re appealing for any witnesses to come forward, or anyone who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch with Crime Stoppers.

“At the time the road was wet and it was raining lightly, but visibility was good and the road’s a good section of straight road,” Sn Sgt Banwell said.
