Cyclist’s bold move to keep cars away: ‘Kind of genius’

A cyclist fed up with cars getting too close to them on the road has resorted to an internationally tried tactic – but not everyone approves.

On Reddit, the cyclist from the US state of Virginia shared a picture of their bike, with an orange pool noodle attached to it so it sticks out several feet at the side.

The noodle is to ensure other motorists keep their distance and the cyclist said they were sick of unsafe, close passing.

While the tactic seems great in theory, and one person said it was "kind of genius", many people had concerns.

One person said they just know someone would try and grab the noodle "as a joke" while passing the bike.

Others also weighed in and suggested the noodle could be dangerous.

"I thought of this, but I worry about a ricochet effect and maybe throwing me off balance," they said.

The person who shared the photo admitted they were probably right, and said they hadn't thought of that.

Noodle tactic tried around the world

This isn't the first time someone has done this. There have been several instances of noodles being attached to bikes all over the world.

In 2019, a Brisbane cyclist was spotted with one attached to their bike at a red light. However, Queensland Police said this sort of thing was not condoned and people should not try it.

“Attaching makeshift accoutrements not designed for use with a bicycle is discouraged by police, as it could obstruct, distract or prevent another driver, rider or pedestrian from safely passing the cyclist," a spokesperson said.

“Any unsecured or makeshift accoutrement has the potential to cause a traffic crash if the item were to come loose on a roadway or cycling path.”

Back in 2016, a man from Canada claimed by attaching a noodle to his bike, his commute to work was much safer. He told the Toronto Star some drivers even praised him for the noodle on the road.
