'Culpa Tuya': Top Prime Video movie is a Spanish-language romance drama with Nicole Wallace, Gabriel Guevara

Based on Mercedes Ron's "The Cupables" book trilogy, "Culpa Tuya" is getting people around the world hooked

When Culpa Mia (My Fault) was released on Prime Video in 2023, based on the first novel in Mercedes Ron's "The Cupables" book trilogy, it quickly became the most-watched non-English language movie in the streaming platform's history. Now Culpa Tuya (Your Fault), based on the second book in the trilogy, still starring Nicole Wallace as Noah and Gabriel Guevara as Nick, is the most popular movie on Prime Video in several countries, including in Canada.

In Culpa Mía Noah and Nick went from bickering step-siblings to lovers, with Noah being kidnapped by her father, who died near the end of the first film. And after all that drama, Culpa Tuya takes us through a rough patch for Noah and Nick.

Noah is starting university, Nick is working in San Francisco and trying to shed his bad boy, illegal street racer reputation. But with the distance, their parents trying to keep them apart, and the introduction of other possible romances in their lives, there's a lot of friction. And let's not forget Noah's new roommate who, unbeknownst to Noah, has history with Nick.

We also see Nick at a moment where he feels particularly lonely, and how he works through that more isolating time is a core part of the story.

"What I always loved about him is how he tries to be his best version for his family, for Noah, always trying to please others and not himself, and how kind he is deep down, and you can see that through his actions," Guevara told Yahoo Canada about Nick's evolution in the second film, via a translator.

"I think it was very important to show in this film it's a very good time to deal with things by yourself, like to face, in a very straightforward way, the things that happen to you. Your trauma is your past and if you face it ... do so in a more mature or responsible way."

A story of passion, crime and drama, Culpa Tuya really has all the components of a juicy romance tale, so it's no wonder the book series quickly became a global success, with more than two million books sold and more than 100 million reads on Wattpad.

"I never imagined the global success it would have, but I always tend to trust my stories," Ron said, with a translator. "The figures we've seen [for the] book is something that is beyond my wildest dreams."

But what makes "The Cupables" book series stand out, in addition to the on-screen adaptations, is that Ron writes for young adults in a way that legitimizes their feelings and circumstances. Far too often stories in this genre talk down to this age group, but she has an enormous amount of respect for her audience.

"I always say that I was the fans' voice," Ron said via a translator. "I connect very well with the young audience. I wrote the novel when I was 19 years old and it's a kind of literature that I still enjoy."

Ron added that she was happy that the team behind the films always treated it as a project with multiple parts. The next book in the series to be adapted is "Culpa Nuestra" (Our Fault), set to be released on Prime Video in 2025.

Prime Video is also adapting Ron's "Dímelo" series, which is already in production.
