Startling discovery after crashed ute sparks fire
A man’s alleged dangerous driving sparked several grass fires in NSW’s southwest and police made a shocking discovery when they searched the man’s car.
On Tuesday, police received multiple reports of a vehicle driving “erratically” on the Hume Highway near Tarcutta at around 7pm on Tuesday evening.
The vehicle was allegedly involved in numerous collisions with guard rails, which caused the tyres to deflate and sparks spread into nearby grassland, according to NSW Police.
The vegetation on a centre median strip and the western side of the Hume Highway suffered “significantly sized” grass fires, according to Riverina Police District on Facebook, who also said due to the dry and windy conditions several grassfires spread along the highway.
The fires resulted in police closing the southbound Hume Highway for several hours.
Officers from the Riverina Police District responded to the reports and the driver stopped approximately two kilometres south of the Snowy Mountains Highway.
The driver was a 23-year-old male and when the police searched his car they seized MDMA and cocaine, as well as about $17,000 in cash which police believe to the the “proceeds of crime”.
The man was arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga police station and was slapped with multiple charges, including dangerous driving, possessing prohibited drugs, dealing in proceeds of crime and charges relating to reckless driving which resulted in the fire.
The man fronted Wagga Wagga court on Wednesday after he was refused bail.
