Covid Victoria: Almost 9500 people deemed close contacts

Almost 9500 people in Victoria are now considered primary close contacts of known Covid cases.

More than 150 exposure sites have been listed by the state's health department as its seven-day lockdown, which began on Thursday, continues.

Victoria reported 11 new locally acquired cases on Sunday, with four new cases being students from Al Taqwa College, in the western Melbourne suburb of Truganina, and three are household contacts of a confirmed case from the Wolf Café in Altona North.

An eighth case is a team member of Newport Football Club and three are linked to the CS Square Shopping Centre in Caroline Springs.

"Two of those cases work at the Jolly Miller Café, which is close to the Spectacle Hub. One works at a real estate agency where no known case has been present – but this new case did attend a number of exposure sites within the venue," the Department of Health said in a statement.

"CS Square in Caroline Springs will be assessed by public health teams and the current Tier 2 listing between 12:35pm and 1:30pm on 4 August may be expanded to take in more hours and days."

Health officials said on Sunday afternoon there were more than 9300 primary close contacts across Victoria.

A million Moderna vaccine doses to arrive next month

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has promised millions of doses of another mRNA type of vaccine will be available in coming months.

Mr Hunt expects the first million doses of the Moderna vaccine will arrive in Australia next month subject to final approval by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, due in the next two weeks.

Once approved, supplies are expected to ramp up to three million per month through October to December.

This comes on top of the effective doubling of the mRNA Pfizer vaccines to two million per week, as well as the home-manufactured AstraZeneca type.

This increased supply comes as vaccination rates have doubled from 700,000 per week a month-and-a-half ago to almost 1.3 million over the past seven days.

"What that does show is we can achieve a two million-a-week outcome in Australia," Mr Hunt told the ABC's Insiders program on Sunday.
