Covid alert for Sydney commuters who took 8 trains, 2 buses

Commuters on several train and bus routes in Sydney are being urged to watch for coronavirus symptoms as NSW authorities desperately look to curtail the spread of at least two Covid outbreaks.

Eight train and two bus journeys, four of which arrived or departed in the CBD, are now the focus of NSW Health as they step up their contact tracing following Thursday’s eight locally acquired cases in the state.

Liverpool, Parramatta and Moss Vale are among the stations visited.

Thursday’s cases ended a 12-day streak without any community transmission in NSW and came two days after the department warned it had found fragments of coronavirus in sewage in southwest Sydney and the Hawkesbury.

Five of the cases announced on Thursday are linked to a Liverpool Hospital dialysis cluster – one healthcare worker in her 30s, two women who visited her while she showed no symptoms, and two household contacts aged in their 60s and 80s.

The source of the second cluster – the three cases revealed on Wednesday – is under investigation.

Premier slams complacent venues

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned it is almost inevitable further cases will arise.

"We anticipate that because we've identified these eight cases, that a number of close contacts and family members could be found to be positive as a result, so it's really important for everybody to stay on high alert," she said.

Late on Thursday, NSW Health alerted the public to three new locations visited by new cases.

Anyone who visited Surf Dive ‘n’ Ski at Castle Towers Shopping Centre in Castle Hill on October 5 between 12pm and 5pm, Chemist Warehouse in Epping on October 6 between 10.30am and 11am, and Macquarie University Sports and Aquatic Centre outdoor pool area at North Ryde on October 7 between 5.30am and 10.30am are considered close contacts.

An infectious person also visited Monopole restaurant in Potts Point on October 4 between 6pm and 6pm, and contact tracing is underway.

Ms Berejiklian said the NSW government was considering making the Service NSW QR scanning code a compulsory feature for venues and businesses after Ripples restaurant in Milsons Point, which was visited by a virus case, failed to record all patrons' details.

"I have no patience anymore for people, and businesses in particular, that aren't doing the right thing… we can't have a few people let down the whole community,” she said.
