Qantas wants travel to return to normal and is offering $683,600 worth of prizes to make it happen.

The Flying Kangaroo is offering fully vaccinated customers $20 off Qantas and Jetstar flights, extra points and credits, along with the chance to win a year’s worth of flights and accommodation. The scheme was first flagged in May this year.

“Getting vaccinated is an important step that every Australian can take that brings us that little bit closer to life as we knew it,” Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said on Monday.

“As the national carrier, we want to recognise those who have made the effort to protect themselves and the community.

“This is one of the biggest giveaways we’ve ever done. The impact of the pandemic on the travel industry and our own Qantas Group team members means we have a clear vested interest in the success of the vaccine rollout.”

Fully vaccinated Australian residents over 18 need to download or update their Qantas App, and download their COVID-19 vaccination certificate through myGov or medicare. Then, upon uploading the COVID-19 Digital Certificate to the Qantas App, they will be able to choose their reward.

Rewards include 1,000 Qantas Points, 15 Status Credits, or $20 off Qantas or Jetstar.

And those who claim a reward will be automatically entered into the draw to win one of eight prize $85,450 packages which includes a year’s worth of flights, Accor hotel stays and fuel.

The promotion runs until New Year’s Eve, with Qantas announcing the major prize winners in January 2022.

“Our crews can’t wait to get back to reuniting family and friends, taking people on holiday and putting some energy back into the whole tourism industry,” Joyce said.

“For us, getting the vaccine rate up to 70 and 80 per cent means thousands of people can go back to work.”

Qantas recently announced another 2,500 workers would be furloughed as the carrier’s horror 18 months with COVID-19 continues to affect operations.

Private sector gets behind vaccination blitz: $17,000 on offer in prizes

The retail, hospitality and tourism sectors have been among the industries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and are now rolling out dozens of promotions to encourage Australians to take up the vaccine.

Half of Australians over 16 have now had at least one vaccine dose, while more than 30 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said Australia will reopen once it hits 80 per cent of the population over 16 fully vaccinated. Morrison plans to hit this target before Christmas 2021.

Here’s what you can get for your vaccine:

Free food, drinks

After a prolonged lockdown, many Sydneysiders would gladly take up a free glass of wine. Luke Mangan’s Glass brasserie in Sydney is offering a glass of wine to fully vaccinated patrons who dine there once it reopens.

Club NSW is also offering a free beer to fully vaccinated people for the day Australia reopens upon hitting its vaccination targets.

Down in Melbourne, the Prince Alfred Hotel in Melbourne is also offering a free draught beer to fully vaccinated customers.

In Perth, the Windsor Hotel is offering a free pint to vaccinated people who head in on the same day they receive their shot.

Hawke’s Brewing Co offered entire slabs of its Hawke’s Lager to the first 250 Sydneysiders who prove they have been vaccinated. This promotion has already been exhausted.

And in South Australia, residents of the remote Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands can score a free meal voucher under a plan by community stores organisation Mai Wiru.

Meals include lamb or butter chicken curry, pasta or a vegetarian meal.

“[Nganampa Health] were going to set up and do a sausage sizzle at the clinic to bring people in to have the vaccination,” Mai Wiru CEO Dennis Bate told the National Indigenous Times.

“They wanted us to provide the food and sausages and fridge and everything so I said, ‘Well, why don’t we just provide a voucher with a meal? That way they can go wherever they want to get it, and you don’t have someone sitting there all day to do cooking to try and bring people in?”
