Couple's battle to move in together after 14-year relationship

A West Australian couple are planning to take on the local council after their plans to build a home were knocked back.

Although Adrian Corp and Lee Katavatis have been together for more than 14 years, the retired couple has always lived separately.

For a year, they have been trying to build their dream house, which would accomodate them into their old age.

When they were drawing up plans, they decided they wanted to maintain their independence.

The plans include two seperate areas under the same roof, giving Mr Corp and Ms Katavatis their own kitchens and living areas.

The two would share a front door, a garage and a laundry.

The couple told Nine News the house was intentionally planned that way so they could grow old in the house.

"So we're closer together how we live but we can also be individuals if we want to be so we're not committed and living on top of each other where we have to compromise," Mr Corp said.

The couple has purchased an empty lot to buy their dream house, in the suburb of Floreat, but their plan has been knocked back by the council.

The council has dubbed the plan a ‘multiple dwelling’, which is prohibited under the current zoning.

According to the Town of Cambridge, building permits must be obtained to build, make additions or alterations to a residential or commercial building.

Sandra Brewer, from Western Australia’s Property Council, told Nine News the plans seemed like a good idea for the couple, and it was up to the local government and planning laws to respond to the retired couple’s needs.

Although the council has denied a building permit, Mr Corp and Ms Katavatis said they could take their case to the Supreme Court if need be.
