Sometimes you just get lucky.

That is the apparent case for one couple who made a thrilling, and rather valuable discovery while renovating their home.

Couple Josh and Emily, both in their late 30s, have been sharing their renovation "journey" online when they learned they'd "struck gold" after completely ripping up the old carpet in their London home.

Hiding under layers of old and rather dirty carpet, was wooden 'diamond parquet' flooring still in impressively good condition.

A video of the couple realising the extent of their discovery has been watched more than 3 million times online with many sharing in their excitement.

"Oh my gosh – Josh, Josh, Josh! It’s a diamond parquet," Emily can be heard excitedly declaring as Josh pulled away the top layers of flooring.

"We saw it was parquet in the corners but this was the first time we pulled it all the way to reveal it was diamond," Josh explained in the comments.

According to the couple, the wooden flooring – which has come in and out of style over the decades – was hidden underneath the carpet for about 30 years.

"We'd seen a tiny corner when we visited the house but when we found out it was diamond parquet in perfect condition we were blown away," Josh told British media.

"We had a flooring specialist come round to have a look and told us it's some of the best type of oak he's seen and in excellent condition."

According to the interior expert, the floor space it covers means it's worth about £20,000 to £25,000 ($38,7000 to $AU48,400).

"We are going to keep it and do a fine sand throughout then finish with either a varnish or stain," Josh said.

While some followers on social media weren't quite sure what all the fuss was about, others shared in the couple's delight.

"You hit the floor lottery!!" one person commented.

"At this point we’re going to start thanking previous generations for preserving such lovely hardwood floors under carpet like that," another said.

It's not the first time someone has gone viral for the discovery they made under their carpet, but it's probably preferable to finding an eerie hidden basement or an unknown cellar under the carpet.
