Couple walking their dog finds man's body in park

A couple taking their dog for a morning walk have found a dead man inside a sleeping bag on the NSW north coast.

Police have established a crime scene after the couple discovered the body at Jack Evens Boat Harbour Park in Tweed Heads on Friday morning.

The man was believed to be in his 50s, but police are yet to confirm his identity or cause of death.

Emergency services were called to the park, on Coral Street, about 11am Friday after the couple discovered the man’s body, NSW Police said.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District then established a crime scene and are currently conducting a canvass of the surrounding area.

Inquiries are now underway by Tweed/Byron detectives – assisted by detectives from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad – into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A post mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to determine cause of death and confirm his identity.
