A couple have been arrested after they were found unconscious in a car with their son, 4, in the back seat, police say.

Nicholas Heinkel, 32, and Brandy Carrico, 39, from St Petersburg, Florida, were recently found passed out in a Ford truck with the child unrestrained inside, a police affidavit says, WFLA reported.

Officers say that after a few moments, the pair woke up and appeared to have bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

Police claim Carrico and Heinkel admitted to snorting cocaine and fentanyl before driving around with their son.

The couple, who allegedly said they had also been drinking alcohol, eventually pulled over at a petrol station, the affidavit says.

The 32-year-old and 39-year-old face charges of child neglect. Carrico also faces a driving under the influence charge, the publication reports.
