A man and woman who fled the scene of a fiery crash that killed a motorcyclist are being hunted by police.

The motorcyclist is believed to have crashed into the back of an early model Holden in Brighton East about 8pm on Friday.

Both vehicles burst into flames and the 21-year-old male rider from Highett died in the impact. The couple fled on foot with their large dog, police say.

Major Collision investigation Detective Senior Sergeant Brad McArthur says it's "despicable" the pair fled the scene.

Police are aware of their identity and he has urged them to come forward.

"The further this matter goes on without them making themselves known to police, the worse it is for them," Det Sen Sgt McArthur said.

The woman is said to be Caucasian in appearance and the man, African. They are believed to be aged in their late teens or early 20s.
