Couple consider divorce to pay for sick daughter's medical costs

A couple are considering getting a divorce in order to pay for their daughter’s medical costs.

Jake and Maria Grey, from Texas in the US, have been married for nine years, but are struggling to afford Brighton’s $20,000-a-year treatment.

The six-year-old has a rare chromosomal disorder called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome and has hearing and vision impairments.

“You know when you have a newborn, everything gets really stressful. You really have to adapt to someone needing you 24-7 all the time. We’ve had a newborn for six and a half years,” Ms Grey told WFAA.

The couple said paying for Brighton’s treatment with a single salary of $54,000 is difficult and are now considering divorcing so Ms Grey would become a single mother-of-two.

She would then qualify for the healthcare Medicaid.

“It’s morally wrong, I feel like, and I think it’s conflicting for me too, because I feel like what’s happening to us is morally wrong,” Mr Grey said.

The couple said they are on a public waiting list, but it could take decades as they are currently number 59,979.
