Council's wild move in neighbourhood parking dispute

A neighbour's complaints about a caravan parked in front of her home has resulted in the local council installing a no parking zone outside her house – a move that has left other residents infuriated.

The woman in the south Sydney suburb of Penshurst complained to her local council about a neighbour parking his van next to her driveway, 9 News reports.

Their response was to install 'no parking' signs on the 15-metre stretch of road in front of her house, without consulting other residents first.

The decision reportedly cost taxpayers $700 and was an issue that Georges River Council unanimously agreed on, according to 9News.

Owner of the caravan, Michael Bajjada, said the move had "punish(ed) the entire neighbourhood".

“I’ve never seen anything like this in this council before, just approving one person in a street to put up a no parking sign purely because she doesn’t want anyone to park out the front of her house,” he told Nine.

He also said that the matter could've been sorted out in a friendlier fashion.

“They could have consulted me, they could have perhaps asked me if I had a strategy for removing the caravan and putting it in storage which I probably would have obliged," he said.

According to the council report acquired by 9 News, the neighbour "allegedly park(ed) both a truck and a caravan" in front of the woman's driveway, thereby blocking her vision when driving out.

The decision to have the whole 15 metres deemed a no parking zone was also based on NSW road rules, which don't allow a vehicle to stop within 10 metres of an intersection where there aren't traffic lights, unless a sign says you can.

“Compliance provides seven days grace period after installation and Council Rangers have issued a warning notice to vehicles parked within that space to ensure they will not be fined from October 19,” a council spokesperson said in the report.
