A local community has praised a hard-working council worker for his "simple and kind" gesture which was witnessed by a resident on their street this week.

During his routine garbage collection, the "legend" was seen picking up wheelie bins that had fallen over due to the wind. He'd parked the truck and jumped out to ensure all bins could be emptied, while seemingly picking up rubbish that had fallen out, preventing a "safety hazard on the road", the council told Yahoo News.

Often, if the bins are not accessible by the truck's mechanic arm, they might get missed leaving residents with full bins for another week. But not if this man has anything to do with it.

"Check out this legend," said the resident who snapped the worker mid-act on a street in Sorell, Tasmania. He was shown hunched over the kerb lifting the fallen bins to an upright position.

Many agreed "not many workers would think to do this" with the worker praised for going "above and beyond" for his community.

"What a fabulous bloke. [Most] just leave [them] on the ground in my area," one said, thanking the man for his "incredible" efforts. "Decent human needs praise and a raise for being kind and helpful to others," another added.

The worker was recognised and identified by some in the comments on Facebook where the resident shared their gratitude, prompting the man to respond to the community's kind words.

"It’s awesome to see what we do is appreciated," he said. "Good on ya mate," one said in response.

Sorell Council told Yahoo News Australia they're aware of the garbage collector's work. He works for Veolia which council has had a contract for kerbside waste collections for many years.

"These sorts of service levels form a large part of the great working relationship we’ve experienced with them for many years now," Greg Robertson, Manager of Health and Compliance told Yahoo.

"We really appreciate these extra efforts in bad weather, as it helps prevent litter from entering our environment and fallen bins creating a safety hazard on the road. No one likes thinking about garbage, but it’s nice to see our community appreciate a job well done."

While it "doesn't happen often", according to some residents, it does happen with similar scenes previously witnessed in a Queensland suburb last year. The local garbage collector was spotted bringing bins to the kerb for a resident who'd evidently forgotten to put them out.

While it was certainly a "generous" act carried out by the council worker, the Moreton Bay council confirmed to Yahoo News at the time it was part of a service offered to residents in the council area.

Bin collection assistance is offered to residents with significant mobility issues where no other able-bodied person lives at the address. It must also be safe for the waste collection contractor to do so. Anyone can apply for the free service so long as they meet the criteria, and there are currently 270 Moreton Bay residents using the service.
