Costco's Recall On This Fan-Favorite Item Has Just Been Updated to Be 'Deadly'—Here's What to Know

The last thing anyone wants to read in connection to their favorite foods is “deadly.” The reality is, when Listeria monocytogenes contaminates our food, it puts consumers at risk of some seriously scary health effects. Such is the case now for fans of the Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon, a product that was first recalled last October and now has been upgraded to a Class 1 recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It’s no secret that Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand does an excellent job at offering high-quality versions of our favorite foods and pricing them a bit lower than the competition. However, those who purchased Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon in twin 12-ounce packages between October 9 and October 13, 2024 might want to hold off on eating what's left of them.

According to the FDA, the new Class 1 upgrade translates to "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." In layman's terms, the Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon packages in question are absolutely not safe for consumption.

For those out of the loop, the CDC defines Listeria as bacteria that can contaminate “many foods” and is a rare, but very serious disease. In the United States annually, 1,600 infections are reported in connection to Listeria and 260 deaths. Pregnant women, newborns, elderly folk and those with weakened immune systems may experience fever and flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches and fatigue. Others may experience headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, diarrhea, vomiting and even seizures.

What we know as of now is that the smoked salmon in question was recalled by Acme Smoked Fish Corporation, which at the time, identified 111 cases of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon in twin 12-ounce packages as being infected. Customers are urged to check their packages at home for UPC 0 96619 25697 6 and Lot number 512801270. They should also look out for the Best-by-Date of 11/13/2024.

The original FDA notice detailed the products as being distributed in the Southeast Costco Distribution Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. They were then sold at Costco warehouses across the state of Florida between the dates of October 9 and 13 before being removed from the shelves entirely after initiating the recall on October 24, 2024.
