Coronavirus Victoria: Daily cases drop again, 12 more deaths

The number of new coronavirus cases in Victoria has dropped again as the state announces a further 12 deaths.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced 216 new cases on Wednesday.

It follows 222 infections on Tuesday, 60 less than Monday’s 282 cases, indicating Stage 4 restrictions are now driving numbers down.

Wednesday’s figure is the lowest daily total in 37 days.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said the latest figure was a “good sign” but noted testing had dropped off.

He said the state was now on the “down slope” of its second wave.

Victoria’s death toll now stands at 363, with 70 deaths in the last four days.

The national death toll has risen to 450.

The victims on Wednesday are three males in their 70s, four females and one male in their 80s and three females and one male in their 90s.

There are 2,050 active cases in the aged care sector.

There are 675 Victorians in hospital, 45 of those receiving intensive care and 29 on ventilators.

On Tuesday, Premier Daniel Andrews said testing had dropped off by 17 per cent and warned if testing rates continued to lower, Melbourne would unlikely be able to leave Stage 4 restrictions regardless of how low infections had dropped by the end of the six-week period.

The city is currently in its third week of its most stringent lockdown yet which includes an 8pm to 5am curfew.
