Coronavirus NSW: Sydney cluster from unknown source continues to grow

NSW has announced one new locally acquired coronavirus case on Monday as the state attempts to control a resurgence of infections.

The case makes it 19 community cases since Thursday when a run of 12 days without known local coronavirus transmission came to an abrupt end.

The new case is a household contact of a case reported on Sunday. These cases are linked to another two cases which to date have a mystery source and remains under investigation, NSW Health said.

There were five cases detected in hotel quarantine.

The list of places visited by infectious people continues to grow, with the addition of two major retail stores in Sydney’s southwest.

Anyone who visited Carnes Hill Big W on October 4 between 3pm and 4.30pm and Edmondson Park Aldi on October 4 between 6pm and 7pm is considered a casual contact.

Passengers on an October 4 train replacement bus at 11.48pm heading to Strathfield from Central are now considered close contacts and must get tested immediately while isolating for 14 days.

There were 7,391 tests in the previous 24 hours, with NSW Health calling on more residents to come forward to get tested as rates have dropped off in recent weeks.

“Testing numbers have dropped recently, which is a concern as it limits our ability to find people with COVID-19 early and contain further spread,’ it said.
