Coronavirus: La Liga stars Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique and Santi Cazorla help raise over £500,000 for medical supplies
Some of Spain’s most notable football players joined forces this weekend to raise money for medical supplies to help in the battle against coronavirus.
National team-mates Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique, who are club rivals at Real Madrid and Barcelona, joined in at the virtual music festival #LaLigaSantanderFest on Saturday evening, as did former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, who now represents Villarreal.
Some of Spain’s most popular music artists participated in the festival, where Ramos, Pique and Cazorla appeared via video calls due to their ongoing self-isolation.
The €640,000 (£570,000) raised will be used to buy medical supplies to aid in preventing the spread of Covid-19.
Fernando Morientes, Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illaramendi and Real Madrid forward Lucas Vazquez also took part in the virtual festival.
La Liga’s suspension of play was extended indefinitely this week, with Spain suffering the effects of coronavirus more than most countries around the world.
The number of cases in Spain is almost at 75,000 and nearly 6,000 Spanish citizens have died from the virus.
The Copa del Rey final between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, originally scheduled for 18 April, has also been postponed.
