Coles ditches final coronavirus limits on household staples

Coles will ditch buying limits on antibacterial wipes and liquid soap, the last items to be restricted, from Tuesday.

Items like toilet paper and antibacterial products were restricted at supermarkets across Australia in a bid to ensure all customers had access to them after the coronavirus pandemic resulted in panic-buying.

Coles began to lift restrictions on some items, becoming the first supermarket to completely lift the restrictions on toilet paper in late April.

Antibacterial wipes and liquid soap were the last two products which still had buying limits as restrictions were lifted on rice and flour last week.

Starting Tuesday, Coles will lift all buying limits on items, meaning customers will be able to purchase as many units of an item as they please.

Of course, buying limits on baby formula, which was in place prior to the coronavirus pandemic, will remain, with customers permitted to purchase only four tins per person.

“We know it’s been a challenging time for many and we hope having no buying restrictions on these every day products will help make life easier for our customers,” a Coles spokesperson said in a statement.

“We would like to thank our customers for their ongoing patience and our team for their incredible work to help us reach a new normal in shopping.

“We are also grateful to our suppliers and logistics partners who helped restock our shelves and the state and federal governments who helped us to get deliveries to stores as quickly as possible during the height of the crisis.”

The Coles spokesperson also said the company’s “biggest focus” was keeping team members and community safe, promising to “get through this” together.

“It’s very important that we all continue to work together and follow government guidelines in store to maintain social distancing,” the spokesperson said.
