Coronavirus: Furious supermarket boss slams shopper's 'ridiculous' request

It seems shoppers aren’t the only ones frustrated by being unable to find certain items on the shelves.

John-Paul Drake, director of Drakes Supermarkets in Adelaide, spoke on his YouTube channel on April 6 ahead of Easter about a hoarder who he blames for “causing the problem”.

In the video, Mr Drake told shoppers how to be prepared for Easter and urged them not to panic buy.

One of the items which have sent shoppers into a frenzy in recent months has been toilet paper. It’s even alleged one customer threatened another with a knife over toilet paper.

On his YouTube channel, Mr Drake says the panic buying of toilet paper has been “absolutely ridiculous”.

“And I had my first customer yesterday who said he wanted to get a refund on 150 packets of 32-pack toilet paper and 150 units of one-litre sanitiser,” Mr Drake says.

“I told him that,” the supermarket boss added as he flipped his middle finger at the screen.

“That is the sort of person that is causing the problem in the whole country.”

Mr Drake later told 7News the man wanted to return the items because his eBay site had been shut down.

He claims the man had a team of 20 people buying up the items.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison last month called for people to stop panic buying.

“It is not sensible, it is not helpful and it has been one of the most disappointing things I have seen in Australian behaviour in response to this crisis,” he said.

“That is not who we are as a people.”

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said the government would come down “like a tonne of bricks” on people caught hoarding and clearing supermarket shelves.
