‘Frightening’: Grim find after man tasered
A knife-wielding man has been tasered and arrested after a woman was found dead in a home in Sydney’s southwest.
Emergency services rushed to a home on Wattle St in Bankstown at 7pm on Sunday night after hearing reports of a small fire at a property.
After extinguishing the blaze at the back of the property, firefighters discovered a woman suffering significant head injuries inside.
Police officers who arrived at the home were then allegedly confronted by a man armed with a knife.
They deployed a taser in order to subdue the 31-year-old man and take him into custody.
The 67-year-old woman was assessed by paramedics before being declared dead.
She is yet to be formally identified, but NSW Police has confirmed that she was known to the man.
A neighbour told NCA NewsWire that the scene was “frightening”.
“They tasered him and then he fell on the ground, after that there were a lot of police all over the place,” he said.
He said he was “sad” to hear about the death of his neighbour, describing her as a “very friendly person” who was involved with Meals on Wheels.
He also went on to express his surprise that the incident took place, saying the street is a “quiet place” and there was usually “no trouble at all”.
“A crime scene was established and detectives have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident under Strike Force Panhandle,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
Police, including a forensic unit, combed through the house for clues as they investigates what happened to the woman.
Five officers in hazmat suits also entered the property.
The man was taken to Bankstown Police Station before being transferred to hospital for assessment.
Charges have not yet been laid.
