Cop puts tradie skills to good use in kind act for elderly widow

A kind-hearted police officer has swapped out his gun and handcuffs for a power drill and hammer after a burglar smashed an elderly widow’s front door from its hinges.

Constable Matt Boswell and Senior Constable Christopher Couch were called out to a home of a South Brisbane resident where they found the terrified homeowner inside.

“It was clear the lady was very shaken from the ordeal,” Constable Boswell said.

“However, the first thing she said was ‘Do you want a cup of tea?’.

After finding out that she had been forced to cancel her day’s plans as a result of the incident, Constable Boswell used his carpentry skills from his previous life as a tradie.

“I went to work bending the hinges back and drilling new screw holes to re-hang the door on the door jamb,” Constable Boswell said.

“It was not a perfect job by any means, but the door was locked and secured.”

After making sure she was okay, the officers took up her offer of a tour and inspected some of her favourite art pieces.

They then gave her some home security advice and left a note for her handyman to assist with making her house more secure.
