Confused shopper questions Woolworths' 'odd chops' pricing

A Western Australian woman has been left scratching her head after buying lamb chops from Woolworths.

The woman, who said she purchased “Odd Chops” from the supermarket, later took to Facebook to question the value of the meat.

“I saw these 'Odd Chops' when visiting my local store on Monday,” she wrote.

“I'm somewhat confused, as they are supposed to be 'cheaper' but are labelled at $19 per kilogram. Funny thing is, the forequarter chops were $13 per kg and even the loin chops were $17 per kg.”

Woolworths has sold “Odd Chops” for a number of years, along with the “Odd Bunch”, which “has saved millions of kilos of fruit and veggies from being wasted”.

However, Woolworths has offered an explanation as to why these particular cuts were more expensive.

“Last week we offered a number of specials on key lamb products for Australia Day barbecues, including our loin and forequarter chops,” the supermarket wrote.

“The odd chop, which is a midloin cut, remained at its normal price for the week. However it's typically much cheaper than our midloin chops.”

Unfortunately, “Odd Chops” is set to be discontinued in the coming weeks.

Woolworths has been contacted for comment, but referred to its Facebook response.

Russell Zimmerman, executive director of the Australian Retailers Association, told Yahoo News Australia Harris Farm in NSW offers the same options with fruit.

“They sell it at a discounted price,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“It’s not necessarily nice, round fruit but the quality is still there.”

While he hadn’t spoken to Woolies about the idea of “Odd Chops”, he said it “makes sense”.

“There’s a big push from supermarkets to reduce waste and it’s a good way of doing it,” he said.

“It’s purely an aesthetic thing. People like food to look beautiful - it doesn’t mean it’s any better or any worse.”
