‘Completely outraged’: Mum furious after finding out doctor gave same ultrasound scan to mums years apart
An obstetrician has been caught out giving the same ultrasound scan photo to several expectant mothers, even though they were pregnant years apart.
Belen Aguilera was the first to spot the bizarre situation when she saw an ultrasound scan an expectant mother posted online, which looked exactly the same as hers from two years ago.
“Some days ago I found an ultrasound scan on Facebook,” she wrote online.
“It rang a bell, and I compared it with the ultrasound of my daughter (in that moment, Dr Eduardo Oliva was attending me, in Constitucion, in the central Chilean region of Maule) and they are the same, the same details, everything, the other baby was dated six years ago and my daughter is one year and 10 months old.”
Ms Aguilera said she then contacted some relatives to tell them about the situation and they found a third mother had been given what looked like the same ultrasound scan seven years ago.
“I am totally outraged,” she wrote on The Creative Educator Facebook page.
“Being able to play like this with the feelings of a person, deluding families who could have been giving scans that are private to other people, I do not want to imagine how the mum of this baby will be when she finds out that it was shared with many people.”
Her post was shared more than 23,000 times, prompting other woman to share photos of the same scan, which they said they had received in recent years.
Local media reports the scan costs approximately 50,000 CLP ($AU105).
Izkia Siches, the president of the Doctors College, said the case was “very serious” if it is confirmed.
Doctor blames ‘technical problem’ for sending ultrasound to multiple mums
Dr Eduardo Oliva has since released a statement confirming the women’s suspicions, blaming a technical problem for having given the expectant mothers the same scan.
“The exam was informed based on a set of 2D pictures which was given to every mother. This medical act was done properly in each of the cases seen in the post.”
Dr Oliva claims the necessary scans were carried out correctly on all the expectant mothers and the printed 3D scan has “no medical value”.
He said he gave the same picture to all the mothers “unintentionally”.
“In the moment of printing the 3D picture, this picture was a preset picture on the printer as a demonstration,” he added.
The medic apologised and said he empathised with the “disappointment and bother of the mothers and fathers”.
The Regional Medical College of Maule is collecting evidence for the case and is yet to give a statement.
The allegations come after a couple accused a retired IVF doctor in Florida, US, of artificially inseminating the woman with his own sperm rather using than that of a donor in the 1970s.
