A man has died after he leaned out of a moving car to push over a cyclist who was then killed.
The female cyclist was travelling along Hollywood Boulevard in Las Vegas on Sunday about 7.25am (local time) when a van came up next to her, police said.
A passenger in the van leaned out the window and pushed her to the ground, but at the same time he also fell from the van and hit a light pole.
Paramedics pronounced them both dead at the scene.
They were identified by Fox 5, who cited the coroner, as Michelle Weissman, 56, and Giovanni Medina Barajas, 20.
Rodrigo Cruz, 22, was behind the wheel of the van.
Police allege he fled the scene but he was later arrested and charged with a number of offences, including one count of open murder. He appeared in court on Wednesday and will return for a hearing in January.
Homicide Squad Lieutenant Raymond Spencer called it a “senseless act”.
“There’s no reason behind this that I can tell you why it occurred, other than complete stupidity,” he told reporters.
Ms Weissman’s husband Lonny told 8 News Now he was in “complete shock” over the death of his “ray of sunshine”.
“What happened was a flat out horrendous and unnecessary tragedy that was 100 per cent avoidable,” he said.
Mr Weissman said his wife had only started cycling throughout the Covid pandemic and where she was killed was a route she normally took.
