Company threatens to cut off woman’s electricity over $0 late fee

A Victorian woman has claimed a power company threatened to disconnect her electricity unless she pays a $0 overdue balance immediately.

The confused woman, only identified as “Annie” by 3AW, said Energy Australia sent her a bizarre letter demanding she pay the fee or they would turn off her power.

“You were required to pay $0.00 [sic] on but we have not yet received this payment from you,” the letter supplied to 3AW reads.

The letter states the electricity company let Annie know every payment needed to be on-time when the payment plan was set up.

“As you have missed your latest payment we have cancelled your extension. Your account is now in our standard collection process which may result in disconnection if the full outstanding amount is not paid.”

Annie told 3AW she believed the bill was a “technological error”.

“It’s just all too absurd,” she said.
