Commuter chaos in Sydney after road worker hit on the M1

Motorists heading into Sydney from Newcastle and the Central Coat are facing lengthy delays after a road worker was hit by a ute on the M1 at Berowra early on Wednesday morning.

Drivers in both directions on the M1 were impacted after a 28-year-old man was struck by the ute while in the breakdown lane just after 3am on Wednesday.

Livetraffic.com reports that lanes remain closed Northbound on the M1, with traffic diverted onto the Pacific Highway at Windybanks.

Southbound drivers are also being diverted around the site and significant delays are expected to be in place for some time as speed limits are reduced.

The roadworker was treated at the scene by paramedics for head injuries before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the ute, a 72-year-old man from Kingsgrove, was also taken to hospital for mandatory testing and to be treated for a minor head injury.

At 8am southbound traffic was queued for approximately 11km, while cars northbound are queued back around 5km.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the M1 and use trains instead as the Crash Investigation Unit remain at the site.
